@volkerdi I'm sure you've heard about Mozilla's changes in their privacy policy for Firefox (it's old news, but still). The implications of it have prompted a few distros to remove Firefox from their repos/default installation.
What's the game plan for Slackware? Will it keep using Firefox by default, or will you be phasing it out of the package tree, or what?
So I put together a #GNOME 48.0 #slackware liveslak, with the basic core desktop (no repo attached). I'd really like to know from anyone who would try it out, if GDM/mutter work on your hardware under Wayland (defaults). I'm trying to understand scenarios where it's broken. The ISO defaults to "Gnome Classic", you'll have to hit the gear in GDM and select "Gnome Wayland" manually first time (if GDM even works for you) login. Help a fellow slacker out ;) https://mega.nz/folder/dgYBBbTZ#Y5yyGKvboSpxqlFXFaPWpQ
Hello
The Slackware-current "All in One" Installer images have been refreshed with the latest version of the Slackware Installer and Slackware package set, and the Install Guides updated.
The new generic EFI bootable ISO has also been refreshed.
Enjoy!
So there’s a layout issue with notifications on Plasma 6.3.4. Firstly, is it bothering anyone? We can back-port the patch if anyone wants it. I’m not rushing to jump on it, but it’s a stones throw away to fix it. https://pointieststick.com/2025/04/02/if-your-notifications-look-kind-of-stupid-in-plasma-6-3-4-its-my-fault/ Anyway, I’ll probably push a fix, maybe when I push the poppler rebuilds soon-ish. #kde6 #slackware
I also put up a new #kde6 #slackware liveslak ISO. Next update will come after gear 25.04.0 releases in a few weeks. https://rekt.lngn.net/liveslak/
Hit a snag on the #Slackware laptop here at work that has a small eMMC (~20 GB). After an update yesterday, it ran out of space. Thus, I've had to remove KDE Plasma and likely will stick with a window manager or use Xfce instead. Was thinking of installing MATE from Slackbuilds using sbotools, but our org is blocking github which is what sbotools uses.
Plasma 6.3.4 is up & at em! Now available within my #kde6 repos for #slackware & #slackwareaarch64 | https://slackware.lngn.net/

Who has two thumbs, just finished configuring and started #Microsoft #Edge and #Teams in #Slackware Linux using the #firejail isolation tool?
The audio in/out test worked on Teams. And Edge has connected to the $WORK account. This may mean I don’t have to reboot to Windows when working remotely 🥳
Commonmark (cmark) package was added to #slackware today! That happens to be one I inherited on #SBo, good to see it added. I know it’s in a few repos of mine, I’ll have to remember to remove it when I’m not afk. http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/slackware/slackware64-current/ChangeLog.txt

1. Add the following line to /etc/default/grub:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="lsm=landlock"
2. Regenerate the GRUB configuration:
geninitrd
3. Reboot your system and verify that Landlock is enabled:
sudo dmesg | grep landlock
Example output:
[ 0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-generic root=UUID=... ro lsm=landlock
[ 0.068388] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-generic root=UUID=... ro lsm=landlock
[ 0.212270] LSM: initializing lsm=capability,landlock
[ 0.212270] landlock: Up and running.
Once enabled, you can use landrun on Slackware-current:

Well, another day, another new addition for #slackware! Today brings the addition of google-go-lang to the official package set! I have not removed it from #nwgshell yet but will be doing so shortly.

#slackware
I pushed icu4c rebuilds to #kde6 #slackware repo today. Latest unstable is building, look ahead for that tomorrow. https://slackware.lngn.net/
Icu4c appears to have been updated in #slackware today while I’ve been working. I’ll get rebuilds out in some hours for the effected #kde6 packages. Did KDE ever drop the next gear beta? That was supposed to be today as well. Ah well, we’ll get it all soon enough.
Slackware AArch64 within VMWare Fusion on macOS (paravirtualized, Apple Silicon) installation guide is now available!
https://docs.slackware.com/slackwarearm:inst_sa64_virt_vmwarefusion
It all looks good to me - I didn't experiment with the accelerated graphics support yet though.
Let me know how it goes!
#slackware #slackwareaarch64 #linux #OpenSource #applesilicon
Well @mozes dropped that #slackwareaarch64 virt ISO file which means now it’s not such a PITA to create #slackware VMs and I can create, melt, burn, combust, and start anew whenever the fancy strikes me. Giddy. Giddy I say! 😊
#slackware (current) has added 'gtksourceview4' (while removing gtksourceview3) today, and as such I've prompty removed it from the #nwgshell repo. When you update your current install if using #nwgshell, you shouldn't notice a hiccup.
I’ve updated #hyprland to 0.48 on the #nwgshell #slackware #slackwareaarch64 repos along with a few other updates recently as well. https://slackware.lngn.net/
- The #Slackware LXC manual: run ˋ/usr/libexec/lxc/lxc-net start`
- The command: can’t run properly, dnsmasq already running.
- Me: ok, fsck off
- create an #OpenBSD libvirt vm.
- configure and run dhcpd.
- configure and run unbound.
- rc.dnsmasq stop
- rc.unbound stop
- Me: can I continue trying to run LXC now!?
@joel On my #Slackware current system using #LXC, I've enhanced security by implementing additional seccomp profiles beyond the defaults.
After a few testings, I don’t think I’ll switch my #homelab to #promox. It seems I may just reorganize my #slackware machine a bit.
I already have libvirt VMs and python venvs. I may just add a web management interface to them; not even sure. Also, I need to move all the bits to a single mountpoint.
I’ve read the slackbook’s lxc section and it looks easy to do. The docker stuff will probably end up there.
In the end, it’ll probably look like my #OmniOS server. I really like the way it is set.
hum… so Teams works ok on #Slackware but the log-in part of Edge does not. Although it does work on Fedora. Got things to dig for…
PS: yes, I know, WTF Teams & Edge. But this is part of an all-in-one to stop OS-hoping thing I’m starting experimenting.
Also going light on the #Slackware laptop running #KDE Plasma. 🔆 🐧
I put up an updated #kde6 #liveslak with the latest stable packages on top of #slackware current. https://rekt.lngn.net/liveslak/
I’ve pushed the gear unstable 25.03.80 updates to #kde6-unstable for arm64 only as of now. There’s new deps but everything seems good to go. Once Intel finishes I’ll put it up but it’ll be another day most likely. #slackware https://slackware.lngn.net/

Happy Pi Day! In a unrealated news, I’ve pushed #kde6 frameworks 6.12.0 to my #slackware repos. Enjoy! https://slackware.lngn.net/
S03E45 - Slackathon: Slackware AArch64 meets Apple Silicon (UTM)
A few hours of hacking this evening and the Installer has booted, OS installed and booted with Linux 6.13. Still a few tweaks but that was fun 🙂
Question to #pkgsrc people in the context of #slackware #linux usage. I have bootstrapped pkgsrc with ˋbootstrap --prefer-pkgsrc yes --prefer-native openssl`. Everything compiles and works well so far.
Trying to build thunar, I get unsolvable error with a dependency. So I added "samba gvfs" to the prefer-native variable in my mk.conf.
But the build process still tries to compile samba4 and gvfs packages. What am I doing wrong?
Well Arch beat me today, but I’ve rolled out #kde6 gear 24.12.3 updates for x86-64 & aarch64 repos. #slackware #slackwareaarch64 https://slackware.lngn.net/
Poppler has been updated on #slackware current, as usual, it breaks some #kde6 things and they are being rebuilt as we speak. Coming soon (tm).
How long have you been using #Slackware ? @ParadeGrotesque
@passthejoe have you tried my #slackware Plasma 6 “spin”? Live ISO is here: https://rekt.lngn.net/liveslak/ it comes with full kde desktop & software, flatpak enabled and much of the standard Slackware install OOTB.
slackpkg+-1.8.1-noarch-1alien.txz has been added to /extra. Previously avoided due to potential breakage from third-party repos (e.g., incompatible shared libraries), it’s now included as alienBOB has fixed known bugs. Use with caution: third-party packages can impact your system. Thanks to phenixia2003, zerouno, and alienBOB for their contributions and maintenance!
(Resume from https://mirrors.kernel.org/slackware/slackware64-current/ChangeLog.txt)
Well the plot thickens...
Leaving the #Slackware qemu VM running for a couple of days and the situation is now inverted:
Slackware VM: 0.2% CPU
#NetBSD VM: still at 1.1% CPU
Host CPU load: 0.15, 0.11, 0.08 (which is perfectly acceptable)
I think @Uilebheist was right when he mentioned the CPU would level out due to the differences between the Linux and the NetBSD kernels.
@ParadeGrotesque did you found any issue in #slackware? 11% its too much.
# sbofind librewolf
SBo: librewolf 135.0
Path: /usr/sbo/repo/network/librewolf
# sboinstall librewolf
#slackware #LibreWolf #FireFox #Mozilla #enshittification #TermsOfUse
Funny to consider that a VM running #Slackware 15 uses around 11% of host CPU, while the exact same VM (CPU / RAM / HDD / etc.) running #NetBSD 10.1 uses only 1.1%
I am now going to try and stop a few services under the Slackware VM to see if I can bring the CPU usage down. But I suspect the real culprit really is the kernel.
Ok #kde6 #slackware 6.3.2 is all good now, with the updated kwin release we have Wayland kicking again, so we’re back to business as usual. https://slackware.lngn.net/
Running KDE Plasma under Wayland on #Slackware just out of curiosity. First time actually running a DE on Wayland. Not noticing anything that stands out, but I guess that's the whole point, eh? I'll keep testing it.
#Slackware just published its advisory and update for OpenSSH MITM (discovered recently by Qualys):
http://www.slackware.com/security/viewer.php?l=slackware-security&y=2025&m=slackware-security.404859
Update! 🤓
I just pushed 7 updates for nwg-shell SlackBuilds to #SBo which I’d been putting off for weeks. Submitted typobuster yesterday and I need to push a few python upgrades yet. Trying to get it partially caught up (as best we can on 15.0). #slackware #SlackBuilds
Big moves from #slackware today involving packages and qt6 libs which directlly effect the #kde6 repo I maintain. The long and short of it is to read my ChangeLog before updating Slackware, but the main take-away before updating removepkg: 'kdsoap-qt6', 'polkit-qt-1-qt6', and 'quazip-qt6' and then upgrade-all like usual. https://slackware.lngn.net/pub/x86_64/slackware64-current/kde6/ChangeLog.txt
My reasons for considering #slackware
Even on Linux Mint, of all distros, there is far too much hand holding, nanny shit.
I can abide by having user accounts and passwords, but to have my system prevent me from installing something because it's "UNVERIFIED?"
MIND YOUR DAMN BUSINESS!
My system, my rules.
So yes, #Slackware is where it's at.
Now on KDE #Plasma 6.3 on #Slackware two days after the release thanks to @jloc0
My bad boy HP Stream 14 got a new battery. After 8 years of honorable service he's got a little exhausted. But after this refreshment he's as bright as ever.
It's been probably a dozen books that I have translated on this laptop since 2017.
He saw #Xubuntu , #Manjaro , #FreeBSD , #OpenBSD and now runs #Slackware (not sure for how long, though).
